The older I get, the more I notice that my life story shows itself in strands.
Probably everyone’s does. My life strands include our next new development project, recreational obsessions (most of them having to do with bird hunting, fast cars and airplanes), my church, All In Leaders responsibilities, self-care, my personal spiritual growth, my marriage and my family.
They wind around one another to make up the whole of my life — and my life is blessed, for sure.
But for me, there’s one strand that matters most — one that no prizewinning building fully captures. You see, these big buildings we build have the “illusion of performance,” but really they are temporary. We keep a pair of photos in our office to remind us: one with my father at his desk with the new 12-story office building we are building, under construction; the other, 20 years later, with me at my desk the moment that same building is being imploded (to make way for bigger and better!).
That other strand that matters is people. For me, that’s where passion and purpose come together.
I’m so grateful that my working career has brought me opportunities to go ALL IN with my passion to inspire, impress and improve communities. But the more healing I experience on my journey, the more I realize what I most want to do is to help men to imagine, then realize, the freedom that a loving God intends for us.
It’s why I have mentored students, leaders and businessmen over the years.
It’s how ALL IN was born.
It’s how my book got written.
Friend, what drives you at your core? What do you want, really?
So let me ask: When you look around your life, your story, your light and dark — do you notice a larger purpose that expresses you more fully rising to the surface? And do you feel freedom in your inner being to pursue it with gusto?
Look closely and with a full heart of acceptance for your own story. Because for each of us, our mission is already written on our lives for everyone to read.
Our part is to make sure the path we choose is the most deeply true undertaking we can imagine — then risk it all for everything that matters.
That is the deep life journey of a superior man. So join us and go ALL IN on the ALL IN journey.
Pause and Reflect
- In your own words, describe what “the life of the superior man” might look like in your life.
- What are you willing to commit to do to become that man?
- Write down or express to a close friend your life passion. Write down or express to a close friend your life purpose.
